If you’ve never met me, you may not realize that getting to know people is one of my favorite pastimes! I am not afraid to ask lots of questions of the seniors I work with, in order to hone in on the things they hold dear. I want to understand their passions, their dreams, and their hopes, and then shape a custom senior shoot around the facets of their personalities. This is just one reason (of many) why we have a pre-session meeting that goes over the things that mean the most to them. Whether it’s a special outfit, heirloom piece of jewelry, or a location that they want to include, we always want to tell their story with authenticity. It’s something that I believe very strongly makes a senior portrait more than just a photo.
I am not a photographer who chooses just one location, because I think you should have lots of variety and plenty of options. Some of our main categories would be city/urban, desert (here in Phoenix, we have so much beautiful desert area around us!), and farm/rustic.
-City/urban: I usually use parts of downtown Phoenix for these settings, because they boast plenty of big industrial buildings, graffiti art, and picturesque rooftoops for the seniors who have a very modern and colorful style. These sessions are very editorial in nature, and also very creative!
-Desert: I love the look of the desert, and feel really lucky we have access to so much beautiful land here in Arizona. The cactus and landscapes look perfect for the bohemian senior, and also with an Anthropologie or Free People-inspired wardrobe (think flowing maxis, chic ankle boots, slouchy sweaters, felt hats, chunky jewelry, etc.).
-Farm/rustic: If you grew up in more of a country setting, or you love the outdoors, these settings might be right for you! I love the look of a lace dress out in a rustic or country setting, but you don’t have to own cowboy boots to make these fashion forward and modern! We can work to find something that is current but also captures your love of the open spaces!
Let me know what kind of location you are hoping for, and we will plan accordingly! I can’t wait to meet you!
Desert: open vistas, cactus and wildflowers. Perfect for seniors with more bohemian style. Includes shooting at Desert Botanical garden, some of our local resorts and at papago Park, to name a few.
Ranch/nature settings includes big red barns, citrus groves, plantation houses and horse pastures. Great lighting and lots of hard to find green lawns and flowers characterize these parks and historic settings.
I am also up for thinking completely outside of the box! If there is something you love and really want to bring into your session, we will find the perfect location! Your residence, local resorts and theaters or popular venues can make for stunning backdrops. Some places require permission but I am have reached out to locations in the past that were thought off limit and have been able to gain access. It never hurts to ask!
