The four seasons: winter, spring, summer, or fall. These different moments through the year all can offer incredible perks when it comes to senior photos, and I enjoy shooting in all of them. Many seniors come to me and ask which is best for senior portraits, and I always encourage them to answer that question based on their own personal photo needs. Most seniors here in Arizona have their photos done between late spring of their Junior year, up until right before their graduation date.
So, what should you consider when you decide the best month/season?
I tell my clients to consider their personal style and the locations that want to use, and when those locations will be most aesthetically pleasing (things like flowers, desert blooms, or temperatures). For those of you with yearbook deadlines, you will need to factor in booking at least six weeks before they are due. Certain schools (I’m talking to you Xavier College Prep!) have a mid-September deadline, so you’d need to book in the warmer summer months to meet the cutoff.
What is your favorite season? Determines style and locations
Spring: March through May is really beautiful here in Phoenix, and it’s filled with soft, pretty light, warmer temperatures (not hot), and plenty of beautiful blossoming flowers. You’ll also find later sunsets, and opportunities to wear things like shorts, sandals, and flowy dresses.
Summer: June through August: This is the hardest time for an outdoor session here in sunny Arizona! You will need to plan for a very early start time for a full session, which is why I offer sunrise sessions during the months of June, July, and August. This has a 4am start time for hair and makeup services, but it’s truly worth it to beat the heat. Temperatures can reach 115 in the afternoon, so it’s good to be done in the early morning. You’ll also earn beautiful sunrise light and lots of floral/greenery for getting up so early!
Fall- September through November: Our Fall is fickle here in Arizona! Early Fall can still be rather warm, but as soon as October hits, evenings are cooler and the afternoon light is beautiful. It’s a great time for knee high boots and hats added to dresses to give the look of fall without dressing too warm.
Winter: December through February: Here in Arizona, we have mild winters but they can still be cold. This is the perfect chance to break out those sweaters, scarves and boots, and can give you that freedom when it comes to fashion. It does get darker earlier, and you will not have as much greenery, but it’s still a great time to book.
Most guys wait until late spring (a.k.a. the last minute) to get pictures done and that’s okay too! We know you are mostly doing them to make your mama happy. Consider booking earlier in the year to get them done and have time to relax and enjoy the rest of your senior year!
